The first hole was called Inspiration because of its magnificent view. The original tee was where the back parking lot is presently, about thirty feet higher and directly to the right of the current first tee; the hole was even more of a blind shot then than it is now. From a lookout post to the left of the tee, one could see a forecaddie or a golf-shop employee, who would signal an okay for the first tee shot. At the original tee were also a small practice green and some benches. Frequently an audience would gather to watch the beginning of a match. The tee was moved to its current location in 1952, at which time the original caddy yard there became a practice green.
